the Common Standards omit, but every high performing country cited includes, such fundamentals in the discipline of English as:
- developing independent interpretations of texts;
- literary criticism;
- the concept of genre;
- drama;
- any student writing beyond explanations and arguments.
That is just a sampling of the significant omissions from the Common Standards.
